Leeds City triumphant in the North, Western Tempo and Bristol & West are victorious in the Midlands, while AFD and Cambridge & Coleridge win senior titles in the South
NORTHERN AUTUMN ROAD RELAYS, Blackpool, Lancashire, September 21
Stanley Park was pressed into service and Leeds City senior men notched up their fifth consecutive title while their women retained their women’s title.
Men
Leeds won by almost a minute from Hallamshire, with Morpeth a minute further back in third.
It had been Morpeth’s Finn Brodie who had taken the first 5.6km double lap with a 16:17 clocking ahead of Derby’s David Bishop, before long time servant Carl Avery extended the advantage with a 16:13 clocking.
Late in the race, Andrew Heyes had closed up for Hallamshire after Phil Sesemann, fully recovered from his Paris marathon effort, had given Leeds a big mid-race lead with a race second fastest 16:01.
Hallamshire could not sustain that momentum and they lost ground but still had plenty in hand over Morpeth, who fell back but wound up a comfortable third after Ellis Hetherington passed Derby on the last leg.
This was only after Ben Connor, the English National runner-up from the previous week, had run a blinder for Derby, with the day’s fastest effort of 15:37, mid-race, before they continued their see-saw up and down rode relays.

Salford won the under-17 men’s race over three 3.2km laps and they had much to thank anchor-man Jack Marwood for their victory as he overcame a Trafford advantage to see his club home by eight seconds with a 9:30 split road relays.
This came after Pio Aron had taken Trafford up with a 9:31 effort, that Evan Grime matched for Salford mid-race.
It had been Warriors Pentathlon’s Oberon Kearney who had taken the opening leg ‘race’, with a 9:20 victory by a second over Rotherham’s Mikey Bacon and these two were fastest overall road relays.

Women
Leeds City comfortably retained their women’s race title over four 5.6km stages, as Salford and Vale Royal completed the top three.
They were all off the early pace, however, as Border’s Esme Davies shared the first stage ‘race’ best time with Warriors Pentathlon’s Emily Haggard-Kearney at 18:08.
The pair could not be separated on time and this was Davies’ first run back in the UK after spending several years in America where she ran 15:59.07 in the Penn Relays.
Haggard-Kearney also spent some years in the United States and had a best 5000m there of 15:39.65 and also ran 32:42 in the Trafford 10km this year.
Most of the best times were on that first leg and third and fourth there, Libby Huxley and Sophie Tarver found that their 18:25 and 18:29 returns completed the top four fastest overall.
Leeds closed up mid-race and were ahead at the end of the penultimate stage where Eleanor Curran ran 19:43 before Jenny Walsh finished things off with a 19:13 stint.
Vale Royal were a comfortable third and their Katie Ward’s 18:41 third leg was their best.

Lincoln Wellington won the under-17 women’s race by more than a minute and had four of the top five times overall.
Isla Porter had set them off with a 10:46 clocking and Ellarose Whitworth, who was second in the English National at Weston Park seven days earlier, brought them home with 10:48.
However, it was a runner in the Lincoln B team, Faith Taylor, who was seventh in that English National a week earlier, who ‘won’ that first stage with a 10:41 clocking.
This was ahead of ahead of Keighley & Craven’s Maisie Bellwood’s 10:43 for the 3.2km leg and English Schools 1500m fourth placer Porter’s 10:46. These three times then stood as the top returns overall.
Mollie Grant soon put Lincoln Wellington ahead mid-race and her 11:00 was the fifth best of the age group before Whitworth finished things off with the fourth best effort of 10:48.

Sale won a close under-15 championship from Liverpool and Houghton after Robyn Haywood-Young brought them home third with 11:17 for the opening 3.2km stage.
However, they were behind Holly Robison and Rebecca Murphy, who ran 10:49 and 10:55 for Houghton and Liverpool respectively.
It was these two times that remained the best of the race but the lead was to change as Liverpool then went ahead mid-race thanks to Maisie Williams.
Finally, Beatrix Soper’s third best overall time of 11:15 saw Sale home and victory by 13 seconds after a competitive race.

MIDLAND COUNTIES ROAD RELAYS, Sutton Park, September 21
Relatively new outfit Western Tempo retained their women’s title, while Bristol & West’s men won their second title in a week.
Despite the storms forecast for elsewhere in the country, a muggy Sutton Park came off pretty well with just one heavy shower during the middle of the senior men’s race, while the women’s event was all but over by the time of the rain.
The young athletes’ races were completed in benign, if unseasonably warm, conditions.
Men
Bristol & West are on a roll and, after Will Battershill led their six men to the English National cross-country title at Weston Park a week earlier, they led from start to finish to win this relay championship.
The West Country outfit have threatened at Sutton Park in recent years with a string of podium places but this was their first for a long time.
Watchers had Bristol penciled in for victory after seeing Battershill and Jack Millar, fourth and eighth at Weston Park seven days earlier, declared in their six-man squad.
With holders Birchfield opting not to run any of their refugee athletes, the title was going to change hands and so it proved as Bristol led after the first 5.88km stage and never looked back.
It was Kurt Taylor who gave the eventual winners the best possible start with a 17:32 split for the opening 5.88km circuit, that was to stand as the fourth best of the afternoon. He said: “I made it hard all of the way and it paid off.”
He was chased home on the opener by Leamington’s Callum Hanlon, whose time was fifth best.
Bristol acknowledged that their slowest man, Luke Burgess was on the second leg, but they held on to the lead as he admitted: “I should be weakest.”
Then Joe Morrow, equal second fastest Jack Millar, Ben Robinson and fastest overall, Battershill finished things off.
Morrow said: “It’s the first time that I have done the relays and it’s difficult when you are on your own (in front).”
He sent Jack Millar off before a heavy rain shower rather dampened proceedings. “It was windy as well,” said Miller.
Fifth man Robinson said: “There was a bit of wind at the start and a bit of rain,” but that had eased by the time Battershill set off.
His 17:05 was easily the fastest of the day and he said that despite the Bristol win already being assured: “I still went for it.” He also noted that his fourth spot at Weston Park was the first time he had run the National.
Bristol & West won by a minute-and-a-half over Western Tempo, who had Dom James also equal second quickest on the last leg but his effort was in vain.
Birmingham Running & Triathlon (BRAT) were third throughout the race and had their John Stolberg sixth best overall.
There was also a veterans’ championship and it was Mansfield who took the win from BRAT. They lead throughout and had their Paul Wright fastest overall on stage two.

Western Tempo retained their women’s title over four 4.33km laps and had Megan Marchant run out the fastest overall with a 14:27 split on the second stage.
After Amber Watson had given them a steady start, behind Birmingham Running & Triathlon’s Naomi Mitchell, it was all Western Tempo.
They had three of the top four times as only Naomi Mitchell interrupted their domination of the time sheets.
Mitchell, says she has her sights on improving her marathon best from 2:30 to around 2:25 in an autumn marathon, probably Berlin.
Tempo’s captain, Marchant, then moved them up to second with the fastest split of the day, before Lauren Cooper and Millie Cooper finished the job.
Cooper said of her run: “I was terrified”, but she need not have worried as the race was all but won before she set off.
Behind on the first stage, junior Zoe Gilbody, who was second in the English National under-20 race the previous week, had placed second for Telford on the first stage, with the fifth best overall women’s time.
She shared that 15:16 split with Hayley Carruthers, whose Tipton club took second, but they were three minutes down.
Mansfield won the masters women’s championship with their W45 Hayley Gill second best behind Lauren Cooper’s 15:35, as both competed on the opening stage.

Mansfield Harriers also took the under-17 men’s event over three 3.88km stages with two of the top five fastest times. Their Jude Ryan was second on the opener and his 12:09 was matched by Jacob Nugent on the final leg.
It was there that Birchfield’s Paul Harrison moved up five places to fourth with the quickest split of 11:59.
Swindon Harriers won the under-15 boys’ event and it was their Finlay Byrne’s last leg run of 12;36 that gained his club two places to take the title by 18 seconds from Charnwood.
He said that he saw his chance and “took the lead by Keeper’s Pool.” However, it was Mansfield’s Jack Pares’ 12;31 on the first stage that took the fastest medal, as his club placed third. Collectively they said they came to win and two of them were in the winning under-13 team last year.
Cheltenham & County won this year’s under-13 event over the same lap but the prize giving was hindered by their runners’ names not being declared by their team manager.
They had Jack Shingler fastest overall on lap three with 13:15 and came from behind after Finlay Stanton took the first leg ‘race’ for Cannock & Stafford with a third best 13:24.
He said that he made his effort “down the hill.”
Wolverhampton & Bilston were second and their fastest lad was Rocco Hawley with a second faster 13:22 mid-race, who said he took the lead “at the top of the hill.”

Young athletes – girls
Wreake & Soar Valley have a good record in this event and, after most of their athletes missed the English National the previous week, they came good here to with the under-17 women’s title by 43 seconds from Stoke.
They had to thank Shaikira King for their victory and the European under-18 800m silver medallist brought them up from fifth on the final stage with the second fastest time of 13:32.
However, deep in the field, Banbury’s Isla McGowan was going even quicker, on that final stage, with a 13;18 time that gained the fastest lap medal. Her Banbury club were also one of those late with their team declarations.
City of Stoke came from nearly a minute down on the opening stage to win by the under-15 race by 33 seconds from Wreake & Soar Valley and did so with the fourth and fifth fastest times from Holly Turner and Lexi Dundas.
However, the quickest splits were all on the first stage where Shrewsbury’s Chloe Stuart’s 13:46 headed Wreake’s Maisie Mullett and Mansfield’s Charlie Whysall.
Shrewsbury had a good day and had earlier won the under-13 girls’ race by 37 seconds from Rugby & Northampton.
They also started steadily before Roni Kohring gave them the lead mid race with a fastest overall 14:15 time before Lucy Hardcastle held on for victory.
The second-best time went to first stage ‘winner’ Bella Lamb’s 14;23, who, there, headed Wolve’s Lilia Pearce, the third best. She said that she “was in front most of the way.”

SOUTH OF ENGLAND ROAD RELAYS, Rushmoor Arena, Aldershot September 21
Cambridge & Coleridge took the men’s six stage and were second to Aldershot in the women’s race and each also won one of the young athletes’ events where six different clubs took the honours.
Thomas Bridger, the BUCS steeplechase champion, set the winners off in fifth spot behind Aldershot’s Ben Bradley, whose 17:41 then stood up as the second best of the afternoon
Cambridge & Coleridge’s next four men were also there or thereabout in times as Josh Carr saw them take the lead by the end of stage four.
Dominic Jones and Jonathan Escalante-Phillips, with 17:49 for equal fourth fastest, brought them home for a half-minute victory over Shaftesbury Barnet.
The north London outfit relied a lot on the Dee brothers: equal fourth quickest Jamie and seventh fastest Liam, who saw them home after Jeremy Dempsey had moved them to second on the penultimate stage road relays.
Bedford & County were fourth for most of the race until Ben Alcock popped in a 17:44 to advance them to third spot at the death as Aldershot slipped out of the medals.
James Kingston had placed third in the English National cross-country championships the previous weekend but here was unable to provide any medals for his Tonbridge team mates despite popping in the quickest time for the double lap 6km stint of 17:32.
This moved his club up from 13th spot, but seventh was as far as they went by the line.

Women
Aldershot’s women had won 11 of the past dozen races staged here since 2005 and their quartet made it a dozen over the only club to have headed them at this venue since their run began in 2006.
That was Cambridge & Coleridge who were always behind the hosts as both moved up as the race progressed.
Thames Valley took third at the death as Kosana Weir gave them a team medal with a 20:51 final leg that proved to be the second fastest women’s time of the day.
Deep in the field, Bracknell’s Amelia Quirk posted the fastest women’s time on stage two by moving up 13 places to the lead, with 19:41, but her club soon slipped back.

Young Athletes – girls
Aldershot’s women also have a good record in the under-17 age group and so it proved here as they took their second team award. This was over Lewes whose Ava James 16:00 saw them home on the third and final leg.
This was behind Aldershot’s Katie Pye, who moved up from fifth to first, with the age group’s fastest split of 15:45 The winners had languished in 18th after stage one before Maya Jobbins moved them up and Pye finished the job.
Earlier Marnie Fieldsend had led for Windsor after the opening 3.851-metre first leg, with 16:23 but her club fell back as Aldershot and Lewes came through
Chelmsford headed Essex rivals Brentwood in the under-15 girls’ event over three 3km laps They led on the opener through Ezrah Harrold, whose 10:03 was second fastest overall then lost out before Geogia March regained the advantage with a fourth best 10:09.
Brentwood snatched second through Summer Smith’s fastest overall 9:59 on the final leg and this saw Windsor’s Kara Gorman follow her through to third with the next quickest effort of 10:05.
Brentwood did win the under-13 girls race but only after Madison Kindler advanced from fifth to the top, on the final leg, with a fastest age group time of 10:12, some 32 seconds quicker than the next best effort.
This was by Chelmsford’s Sophie Bolton, who had ‘won’ the opening 3km stage with 10:44 and her club held on for second.

Young Athletes – boys
It was Blackheath & Bromley who won the under-17 men’s event after Joseph Scanes moved them up from third to first over the last 3851m lap with a second quickest 13:56.
Sutton & District’s Alex Lennon followed him through to second team medals with 14:06 as they too recovered from a steady start road relays.
Thid placed team City of Norwich had to thank Michael Clark, who ran a mid-race 13;57 to move them up to second with the fastest time for this age group before they lost a place by the line.
Earlier, Cambridge & Coleridge had won their second title by leading throughout the under-15 boys’ race over three 3km laps They started with Finn McLennan’s 9:18 which then held up as the best of the section road relays.
Harry Cantell and Harrison Pearson, with the third best time of 9:23, then finished the job as Teddy Murphy chased hard for Dacorum to give his club second spot and the second-best split of 9:19 road relays.
The first race of the day had seen Hercules Wimbledon take the under-13 boys’ race from Windsor They had much to thank Max Harrison for as he moved them up from 13th to the front on the third and final leg with a 10:16 split,
However, there were quicker time behind, as Windsor’s Arthur Evans chased him home with 10:15.

Masters
In a packed programme there were also area championships for veterans and, while hosts Aldershot added another title, the M50 one, honours must go to The Stragglers club who had the first two teams to finish in the over-40 women’s event, where 19 teams of three competed. However, times were slow with their Sarah Holt fastest with 13:53 road relays.
Kent won the M40 race but none of their quartet broke 20 minutes for the double lap 6km stage. They were only sixth on the opener but moved up before Chris Busaileh sealed victory on the final stage
There, the fastest lap went to Woking’s John Hutchings with the respectable time of 19:00.
Aldershot led throughout the M50 race after Simon Cooper ran the age group fastest time of 20:25 on stage one.
Ten over-60 squads competed and it was Colchester who came out on top thanks to Colin Ridley and Paul Mingay finishing things off for their foursome road relays.
However, easily the fastest lap went to Harrow’s Mark Cursons at 21:49, just a tad quicker than Herne Hill’s Dave Taylor, a former international masters champion and European senior cross-country team bronze medallist. Their times were the fastest M60 outings here since 1996 and compare with the lap record of 21:06 set by Laurie O’Hara back in 1995.
Brighton & Hove took the women’s W50 team after their Linda Schofield was fastest overall in bringing them home with a fastest age group time of 16:42 for their 3851m lap road relays.
