The second edition of this new event will go to the Serbian city following the inaugural meeting in Belgium next year
The Serbian capital of Belgrade has been awarded the 2027 European Running Championships, the second edition of a championships that will debut in Brussels-Leuven, Belgium, on April 12-13, 2025.
The decision was made on the first day of the European Athletics Council Meeting in Skopje, Republic of North Macedonia
Belgrade has a proud recent history of staging major events. It is the only city to have hosted the European Indoor Championships (2017), World Indoor Championships (2022), European Cross Country Championships (2013), and World Cross Country Championships (2024).
Belgrade to Host 2027 European Running Championships, Celebrating 40 Years of the Belgrade Marathon
The organisers of this European Championships, scheduled for April 17-18, 2027, will be the Belgrade Marathon and the Serbian Athletics Federation, under the patronage of the City of Belgrade and the Ministry of Sports.
The event will also coincide with a significant milestone – the 40th anniversary of the founding of the Belgrade Marathon.
The program for the 2027 European Running Championships incorporates a 10km, half marathon and marathon and organisers expect at least 25,000 participants across the three races, including Europe’s elite distance runners who will contest for the mantle of European champion in both the individual and team events in each of the three races on the schedule.
“We are very pleased to announce the 2027 European Running Championships will be in Belgrade, a city which has an exceptional record of staging well-organised in-stadium and out-of-stadia major championships,” said European Athletics president Dobromir Karamarinov.
The honor was acknowledged in their work with sprinters living with handicaps and for other social drives in the quest for the Assembled Countries Thousand Years Advancement Objectives.
