Birchfield athlete wins Brecon Carreg CDF 10km in Cardiff as we bring you our latest UK-wide distance running round-up
Omar Ahmed, Birchfield team-mate Kadar Omar and Swansea’s Dewi Griffiths did battle again in the fourth and final event of the R4W series and it was again Omar Ahmed who came out on top for complete a clean sweep in all four series races.
However, it was close at the line as the Birchfield Harrier only just got the nod on Griffiths by one second in a personal best 28:27.
Omar Ahmed said: “I was feeling good today. My first 5km was very fast after I tried to pick up the pace in the first mile to create a gap, but then Dewi caught me and I stayed with him until the last 200 metres.”
Omar Ahmed victory
It was victory over Griffiths by just a single second as the Swansea Harrier’s 28:28 was just outside his best of 28:20 from Manchester in May.
In a race that takes runners past the medieval castle and the Principality Stadium before returning to finish alongside Alexandra Gardens and the Edwardian Civic Buildings, Omar Ahmed was pleased with the route and said: “The course was amazing as it was so flat. I’ll definitely be back.”
In third, Omar ran an isolated race and ended up with 29:52, more than a minute clear of fourth-placed Dan Nash.
In the women’s race it was Kate Estlea-Morris who claimed victory in 34:34 from Deborah Bruce, with last year’s and July’s Ogi Porthcawl 10km winner Alaw Evans in third.
Estlea-Morris said: “I’m really happy. I wasn’t too worried about time going into this race as I’m training for a half marathon in a couple of weeks, so this was just a fitness test, but I’m delighted. I didn’t expect to win.”
The Aldershot runner also praised the route, adding: “I loved the course, it was nice and scenic and flat too and the crowds carry you away.”
Second placed Bruce equalled her personal best of 34:56.

MID-CHESHIRE 5km, Kingsley, August 30
Two of this year’s Inter-Counties cross-country champions filled the leading positions in the overall race and it was the younger under-20 one from Birchfield, Aron Gebremariam who came out on top of a close battle, by four seconds in 13:58.
It was the Eritrean refugee’s first outing on the roads after a string of track and cross-country victories, whereas second placed Calum Johnson is at home on the roads with a string of victories over the years. Nevertheless, the Gateshead Harrier’s 14:03 was a personal best.
Behind, Andrew Heyes won an even closer battle for third spot in 14:09. There was more experience behind where John Gilbert took the M40 section from former Kent club mate James Connor in 14:30. The two veterans had previously jointly topped the M40 rankings with 14:41, but Gilbert’s time was not only a personal best but also went seventh on the all-time age group list behind Keith Anderson’s 14:10.
Samantha Harrison retained her Mid-Cheshire title in 15:18 after running 15:11 last year. The 2022 European and Commonwealth Games 10,000m sixth placer had been out of action since a 67:08 half-marathon personal best in Valencia last October.
That was for fourth on the all-time lists and, before this outing, the Charnwood runner only had a try-out parkrun two weeks before.
There was a sense of deja vu as, behind, Lauren Heyes again took second, but did so in a personal best 15:24, 10 seconds faster than her second placed effort here last year.
Emily-Haggard-Kearney, the Northern Ireland cross-country champion, was just outside her previous best in third spot with 15:59.
